Both boys and girls cross country teams ran brilliant strategic races Thursday at the South Bend City Championship.
The boys team upset favored Adams while narrowly falling to a strong Riley squad. Marko Enriquez, Josh Juday, and Zach Taylor finished 2-3-7 overall with incredible surges over the final 800 M Erskine hill to push St. Joe to the brink of a team championship.
Inspired by the boys’ performance, the girls team ran a smart race as a pack to place 9 finishers in the Top 15 overall and sweep both the JV and Varsity City Championship. Alexis Kintzele was a medalist placing 3rd overall, Maeve Kearney 7th, Libby Kearns 8th, Ava Rousseve 9th, Katie Lavelle 10th, Tess Collins 12th, Ellen Lavelle 13th, Margaret Hopkins 14th, and Maeve O’Shaughnessy 15th.
The girls championship is the 23rd City title in school history and first JV/Varsity girls sweep for St. Joe since 2015.
