The St. Joe Indians gave a mighty effort at Freed Field, but came up one touchdown short against the Penn Kingsmen.
John Driscoll opened up the scoring with a 1 yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Penn answered with a long drive to tie the game. Then St. Joe got the ball back, but when stopped on third down, Penn blocked the punt and had a short field to take the lead with another touchdown.
The second quarter was a stalemate featuring strong defensive work including a Noah Hickey interception. An interesting field goal attempt happened at the end of the half. After a fair catch, a free kick is allowed to the receiving team. St. Joe lined up for the 67 yard blast with the wind at their back and came up just short.
The Indians came out fired up in the second half shutting down the Kingsmen and getting the ball back after a fumble on the punt attempt by Penn. The Indians missed a field goal, but got another chance right away following a tenacious defensive stand. Ashton Ruszkowski punched in a touchdown from the 1. On this blustery night, though, any kick was an adventure, and the extra point sailed wide.
Penn took the ball back and scored their final touchdown. In the end, St. Joe played extremely well, but couldn’t put together enough first downs to get a third touchdown.
Indians get back to work this week with renewed purpose and drive as they go on the road again at Mishawaka.
